United Way of Southwestern Indiana Announces Leadership Transition

United Way of Southwestern Indiana today announced completion of its 12-month leadership succession plan with the Board of Directors accepting Amy Canterbury’s retirement (effective April 1, 2024) and promoting Amy Mangold to President and CEO.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, we thank Amy Canterbury for leading United Way and our community through a strategic planning process to modernize our funding model,” said Richard Leger, Chairman of the Board. “Amy spearheaded the transition from an agency first approach to a competitive process that prioritizes community impact and along the way, secured our place as one of the most progressive United Ways in the nation.”

Amy Canterbury assumed the role of CEO, United Way of Southwestern Indiana in January 2016. During her tenure, she helped advance multiple regional initiatives like Talent EVV, GROW, and the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) - all instrumental in improving the quality of life for our residents. In recognition for this work, Amy received the Leadership Evansville Public Service Award in 2018 and was a finalist for the Athena Award.

“I came to the United Way with a goal of building relationships across all sectors of our community,” said Amy Canterbury, former President and CEO of UWSWI. “From my years living and working in Evansville, I knew growing relationships with diverse groups was the key to identifying critical community challenges and the resources designed to address them. That’s why a strong succession plan that ensured a smooth transfer of organizational knowledge was at the top of my to-do list as I started considering retirement.”

In March 2023, the Board of Directors approved a formal transition plan that split the president and CEO role into two positions and shifted executive leadership roles from Amy Canterbury to Amy Mangold over the course of 12 months.

“Amy Mangold is more than prepared to lead United Way of Southwestern Indiana,” said Amy Canterbury. “We worked side-by-side over the past year to make sure our donors and partners understood the new Pathways to Potential framework and our mission moving forward. We have a strong leadership team in place, and now it’s time for me to step away and let Amy lead this amazing organization.”

Richard Leger, Chairman of the Board echoed this sentiment saying, “With Amy Mangold as President and CEO, United Way SWI is poised to reach its goal of empowering individuals and families with resources to support upward mobility.”
